Overview

The hike to Lares Lares with the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu is one of the most beautiful and quiet of Cusco.

The best alternative to the classic Inca Trail is this hike that combines the best landscapes, natural areas and coexistence with local people.

On this route you can also appreciate many South American camelids typical of Peru, especially many alpacas, llamas, guanacos, which were especially sacred to the Incas (llamas played a vital role in transportation, and some were used in sacrifices as a form of sanctification for a good yield in crop production.

All along the route from Lares to Machu Picchu, we will be able to share moments with cheerful traditional villagers who still wear the conventional attire (bright and colorful) of the original natives of the area.

If you like to hike amidst beautiful scenery, this hike is for you, gain more historical knowledge, and get to know the people by seeing their regular contact with Pachamama («Mother Earth»).  This trek to Machu Picchu also allows you to fully enjoy the unique microclimates and landscapes, along with the ancient cuisines and fresh, natural products. We have a very experienced cook who will surprise you with delicious meals.

NOTE: For this trek it is necessary that you acclimatize at least 2 days in the city of Cusco.

Itinerary

Day 1: Cusco – Huaran – Cancha

Sites to Visit

The adventure begins at 5:30 a.m. when we pick you up from your hotel. We will drive in our private vehicle to the town of Pisac (1 hour approx.), receive a talk about the ruins of Pisac while enjoying the sunrise and the breathtaking view of the Pisac Valley and a delicious breakfast.  Afterwards, we will travel to the town of Huaran (40 min.).  It is here that you will link up with our staff, regroup and organize for our adventure to Lares Trek to Machu Picchu.

We will begin the trek in a gentle and easy way where you will see the natural way of life of the inhabitants of this region and observe the corn and potato fields.  We will continue the hike for another three hours on a gravel road until lunch time.  After lunch, we recommend you take a nap. We will then hike for approximately 1 hour until we reach the «Cancha – Cancha» camp, where we will enjoy breathtaking views of the snow-capped mountains and the main trail that we will follow for the next three days.

We will be able to spend pleasant moments sharing with the local people and having dinner and hot drinks.  In the evening we will delight in observing the constellations and snow-capped peaks.

Day 2: Cancha – Quishuarani

Sites to Visit

We will start the day early at 5:45 a.m. enjoying a nutritious breakfast and coca tea.  After packing up, we will continue ascending, and you will find the children herding.  According to Peruvian tradition, we recommend bringing gifts (clothes, toys, especially books and pencils).  In case you have altitude sickness during this steep climb to the top, we will have horses to ride while you rest (Approx. 4 hrs.) until we reach the peak called «Pachacutec».

Arriving at the village called «Acopata» to enjoy a delicious cup of coca tea / soda while we appreciate the crystal clear lagoons and observe part of the sacred valley.

Afterwards, we will walk to the community of Quishurani, still descending for 1:40 min. approximately, to stop for lunch.  After lunch, we will continue for another 2 hours to reach the camp (Quishurani).

The trip is about 30 minutes to the isolated «hot springs» near the town of Lares.  After enjoying the different naturally heated hot springs, we will have lunch.  After enjoying lunch we will take our transportation to Ollantaytambo (part of the Sacred Valley).  Here we will have dinner at the restaurant and then sleep in the lodge.

Afterwards, lunch will be served (actually, I will have a box lunch, if you are vegetarian or have any allergies, let me know).

After lunch, we will continue the hike to the (Intipunku-Sun Gate), one hour and a half then we will have time to take some pictures (THE FIRST MIRADOR OF MACHU PICCHU) and then it will be only 40 minutes to Machu Picchu, one of the seven wonders of the world and the mysterious place. In case you have made your reservation to climb the Huayna Picchu mountain, you will start your hike at 7:00 – 10:00 a.m.; please coordinate with the Tourist Guide your visit depending on the schedule programmed by the Municipality.

There are many more activities that you can do.  These activities are optional (not included in the package), for example, the «Puerta del Sol» (2 hours walk up and down), where you will appreciate the Inca city from a different point of view.

In the afternoon, you will take the train (4:20 p.m.) to reach the town of Ollantaytambo. Upon arrival in Ollantaytambo, we will have transportation waiting to take you back to your hotel in Cusco (2 hours approx.).

Recommendations

What To Bring

  • A good day pack: such as Eagle Creek Afar Backpack (Appropriate pack to carry your personal belongings.)
  • Original passport (International Student Identity Card “ISIC” if applicable)
  • Travel insurance (strongly recommended but not required
  • Lighter trekking boots (with good ankle support)
  • 3 pairs of trekking pants (not jeans), 1 hiking, 1 cotton–which is just enough. Please spray both pairs with an insect repellent spray before the trip.
  • Layers for variable temperatures especially at night.
  • 1 rain jacket: The first night the temperature can be as low as – 5 degrees Celsius/23 degrees Fahrenheit. A rain jacket can be helpful because there are rainy days even in the dry season!
  • 1 warm/winter jacket (Thermals: wool socks/gloves, scarf and woolen hat for cold nights).
  • 4 pairs of underwear, 6 pairs of socks (Bamboo or cotton/nylon-blend socks dry faster than 100 percent cotton, which lose their softness when air-dried.) It is nice to have a couple of extra pairs of socks to change into at night when you’re not hiking. Also, we recommend bringing both heavy hiking socks and lighter socks as well as the weather is variable, so you want to make sure you’re not too cold or too hot.
  • 4 t-shirts, 2 long sleeve shirts
  • 1 good sleeping bag liner which is super lightweight and easy to pack. This does its job!
  • Travel-size tissues and wet wipes.
  • Iron tablets and pills for altitude sickness. Several people on the hike have varying degrees of altitude sickness and both of these remedies (in addition to the coca tea) are very helpful in alleviating the symptoms.
  • Sun protection cream (SPF 45 or higher recommended).
  • Bug spray with 30% DEET in it–which you need, but it doesn’t work very well. The issue with Cusco outdoor is that most of the bugs are not mosquitoes. They are these small flies you can’t even see that leave weird bites that first look like you pricked your finger and then blow up into itchy red bumps. Unfortunately, these bugs seem to bite you no matter what kind of spray you put on, so bringing some anti-itch ointment could be helpful.
  • Re-usable plastic or metal water container or a hydration pack such as Camelback
  • Water (Only for the first day of the hike, as we will provide you with water throughout the rest of the hike).
  • Camera
  • A headlamp to navigate camp in the evenings and pre-dawn mornings with spare batteries
  • Bandages or moleskin
  • Flip flops to change into at night. Your toes will thank you!
  • Toiletries
  • Medication (Imodium AD or something for your stomach) because some people get an upset stomach on the trek. Also, Ibuprofen or Acetaminophen can be helpful to help with aches and pains after 8-10 hours of hiking each day.
  • Plastic bags for dirty and wet clothes
  • Something to read in the evenings
  • Extra money for drinks, tips in Soles for cooks, horsemen, guides. (USD$60-70).
  • Emergency money at least 300-450 extra soles (USD$ 220)
